Stone Island è una filiale di C.P. Company fondata da Massimo Osti nel 1982. Un anno dopo il marchio viene acquisito da Carlo Rivetti di GFT. Massimo Osti è stato designer del brand per un periodo, traendo ispirazione da materiali innovativi precedentemente utilizzati come teli per camion, oltre che da un’estetica militare, incluso il logo della rosa dei venti.
